Amid a geopolitical competition that has been raging for years at all levels between China and the United States, Beijing appears to have overthrown Washington in the field of diplomacy.
China has become the largest diplomatic power in the world, with a broader presence than the United States, according to the latest report issued by the Lowy Institute.
Although progress is somewhat meager, the 2024 Global Diplomacy Index highlights Beijing’s continued efforts to expand its influence amid intensifying competition with Washington.
274 vs. 271
It also classifies 66 countries and regions according to the number of diplomatic posts they hold around the world.
China came in first place with 274 positions in its diplomatic network, followed by the United States with 271.
In this context, Ryan Neelam, director of the Public Opinion and Foreign Policy Program at the Lowy Institute, said in a statement: “Diplomacy is often overlooked as a measure of influence, but it is a very important component of statecraft.”
He also explained that “the Global Diplomacy Index proves that governments continue to invest in diplomacy to demonstrate their strength and achieve their interests,” according to Newsweek.

This year’s report results showed that Beijing is leading in Africa, East Asia, Pacific Island countries and Central Asia.
While Washington still enjoys superiority in Europe, North and Central America, and South Asia.
