Representatives of business leaders yesterday demanded that Claudia Sheinbaum guarantee public security in the country, combat impunity and update rules so that there is certainty in investments.
The presidents of the Business Coordinating Council (CCE), Concamin, Coparmex, Canacintra, Caintra Nuevo León, American Chamber and Eurocam, among others, urged the presidential candidate of Morena to overcome the inertia of distributing blame and privilege the dynamic of assuming responsibilities in economic matters. Comparing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) as if it were a car, Antonio Basagoiti, president of Eurocam, said that Mexico legitimately decides its energy sources or how to provide security on the highway, but external investment decides its speed.
“Let’s think that FDI is like a car: it works, it goes well, it travels at 80 or 90 kilometers per hour, but it could go faster if there were few insecurity limits, with clean fuel, with training or updating traffic regulations, such as our treaty of Europe”, he explained. Alejandro Malagón, president of Concamin, said that businessmen are clear about what the country’s priorities are. “Certainty for investment is development for the nation.
In this it is vital to strengthen our institutions and work together for security and against impunity. There is no strong country without a strong institution,” he noted. For his part, Carlos García, president of AmCham México, warned that security is one of the challenges that urgently needs to be faced in a coordinated manner.
“Security, combating poverty, water stress, energy transition, to mention some of the most important ones. AmCham published, in June of last year, a document of public policy proposals that we call Route 2024-2030, the same one that I put in your hands in October of last year,” he recalled to Sheinbaum.
“These proposals are grouped into 22 lines of action around six strategic pillars. Security and rule of law; Economy and Public Finance, Foreign Trade; Attraction and Investment, Wellbeing and Sustainable Growth and Innovation and Digital Economy.” In his turn, Sheinbaum pointed out that one of the purposes of the meeting with the business sector is to “reach an agreement” for the future.
He explained what he called the axes of his Government proposal, and highlighted the promotion of regional development poles and production chains. When answering questions about public insecurity, he maintained that this problem is going down. “To accelerate this decrease we talk, of course, about attention to the causes and strengthening the National Guard. Furthermore, what has to do with the Prosecutor’s Offices and the Judiciary, which is essential to be able to advance zero impunity in our country,” he indicated.
