Additionally, family members may be separated during a storm, so be prepared by making a plan to communicate and reach out to each other.
Prepare a family kit such as: flashlight, radio, warm clothes, blankets, first aid kit, medicine, bottled water and non-perishable food… Families with children should let each child create his or her own personal kit.
While the storm is hitting
People still need to regularly monitor storm forecasts and warnings on mass media and village and commune loudspeakers…
“Beware of accidents caused by falling houses, trees, electric poles, objects blown by the wind, electric shock… Absolutely do not take shelter under trees, electric poles, or objects that can easily fall. Stay indoors, in shelters, do not go outside, stay away from windows and doors,” the disaster prevention and control agency recommends.
In particular, people need to prepare flashlights in case of power outages, do not use candles to search for items in confined spaces or gas stove areas, because it can easily lead to the risk of fire or explosion.
If ordered to evacuate, take essential household items with you and move immediately to a shelter arranged by local authorities.
“It is necessary to promptly and accurately inform about the location and dangerous situation when rescue is needed,” emphasized a representative of the Department of Dyke Management and Disaster Prevention and Control.
After the storm hit
The disaster prevention and control agency said that people should continue to monitor news and weather updates even after the storm has made landfall; they are only allowed to return home from evacuation sites with permission from local authorities.
At the same time, pay attention to dangerous factors such as: downed power lines and electrified water, because usually when the storm passes, the possibility of flooding still occurs.
Never approach or enter damaged or flooded buildings; obey warning signs when driving, and do not enter flooded or blocked roads (even with large vehicles) as they may be swept away by water or become dangerous.
