Pressure from the Vienna People’s Party seems to be working – revitalization has been repeatedly postponed since 2017
Vienna (OTS) – “We not only welcome the renovation and modernization measures presented today, but have also been pushing for their implementation for some time. Hopefully it’s not just empty promises again,” said the sports spokeswoman for the Vienna People’s Party, local councilor Bernadette Arnoldner, about the construction work on the sports club square presented today by city councilor Peter Hacker and Wien Holding managing director Oliver Stribl.
But the Vienna People’s Party doesn’t want to get excited too early, because the urgently needed renovation of the oldest football field still in use in Austria has been promised for years. “In June 2017, the local council approved funding of 5,700,000 euros for the revitalization of the stadium for the first time. Nothing happened,” said Arnoldner and continued: “In the fall of 2018, the local council again approved a subsidy totaling EUR 6,250,000. But even with the increased budget nothing happened again.”
Almost two years later – in June 2020 – the groundbreaking ceremony for the renovation finally took place with media attention. The modernization of the stadium was promised to be completed in summer 2021. Apart from minor repairs and the demolition of the roof of the old main stand and the standing stand on Kainzgasse, no modernization or construction work has taken place.

“We already made an inquiry in January about, among other things, the specific renovation work, the status of the renovation and the planned completion of the renovation of the stadium. The answer is still in the works,” says Arnoldner. In order to highlight the urgency of renovating the stadium in the Dornbach district of Hernals, the Vienna People’s Party submitted a proposal to the local council last week to implement the new project as quickly as possible and to submit regular progress reports to the responsible local council committee.
“We are happy that our persistence has brought the project back into the focus of the city council and we hope that the Wiener Sport-Club Platz will finally receive the renovation it deserves and that the construction work will be completed within the announced period this time “We will be able to do this,” concludes Arnoldner.
