Climate partnership between Wien Energie and Therme Wien continues to be implemented – heat pump installation is followed by photovoltaic systems on thermal bath roofs

Vienna (OTS) Wien Energie and Therme Wien are focusing on energy efficiency at the Oberlaa location as part of their climate partnership. This applies to both heat and electricity. After installing two heat pumps, the photovoltaic systems on the roofs of the thermal baths will now be commissioned. 820,000 kilowatt hours of green electricity will now be generated annually and will be used directly to power the thermal world. In total, this system can save around 400 tons of CO2. This is as much CO2 as 170 long-haul flights from Vienna to Tokyo normally consume.

Extensive roof areas like those at the Therme Wien are particularly suitable for generating green electricity because, due to their size, more green electricity can be produced. The new photovoltaic systems generate as much electricity annually as the equivalent of around 400 two-person households in Vienna“, says Peter Hanke, City Councilor for Economic Affairs and Vienna Public Utilities.

“As Wien Holding, we support the city of Vienna in achieving its climate goals. I am particularly pleased that 820,000 kilowatt hours of green electricity will now be generated annually on the roofs of the Therme Wien. With the new photovoltaic system, Therme Wien is making an important contribution to CO2 reduction. With projects like this, we contribute to the sustainable development of Vienna as an economic and living space.”says Oliver Stribl, Managing Director of Wien Holding.

Our climate partnership with Therme Wien is a great example of sustainable energy production. The successful implementation of the heat pump, which uses the wastewater from the thermal pools to provide heat to the people of Vienna, was just the beginning. We have now implemented a photovoltaic system together to make electricity generation on site green“, explains Michael Strebl, Chairman of the Wien Energie Management Board.

Therme Wien has been producing a large part of its own heat for years. In addition, we are constantly implementing further energy efficiency measures. With the new photovoltaic system, we are taking another big step in sustainable energy management. This is particularly important because the massive increase in energy costs poses major challenges for all health and leisure facilities“, says Edmund Friedl, Managing Director of Therme Wien.

Sustainable energy management for Therme Wien
Therme Wien has been investing in the area of energy efficiency for years and is planning further investments towards energy self-sufficiency. Over the last 13 years – since the construction of the new Therme Wien – it has been possible to cover around 60 percent of the total heat requirement by using the waste heat from the thermal springs. The waste heat from the thermal wastewater has been used to generate district heating since May 2022 in collaboration with Wien Energie. This means the heat is used ideally.

“Smartflower” solar flower installed in front of the main entrance
As a symbol of the climate partnership between Wien Energie and Therme Wien, a “Smartflower” was installed in front of the main entrance to the thermal baths. The solar modules are modeled on a large flower and follow the sunlight independently, generating up to 9,000 kWh of electricity per day. The “Smartflower” automatically folds up at sunset and cleans itself to ensure maximum sun use over time.

About the Therme Wien – successful project of the VAMED Vitality World
The internationally active healthcare group VAMED has been involved in the thermal spa and wellness sector since 1995. Under the competence brand VAMED Vitality World, founded in 2006, VAMED operates six of the most popular resorts in Austria: the AQUA DOME – Tirol Therme Längenfeld, the SPA Resort Therme Geinberg, the Therme Laa – Hotel & Silent Spa, the St. Martins Therme & Lodge in Frauenkirchen , the Therme Wien and the TAUERN SPA Zell am See – Kaprun. This makes VAMED the leading operator of thermal and health tourism resorts in Austria. The owners of Therme Wien are Wien Holding GmbH, VAMED AG, Vienna Insurance Group Wiener Städtische Versicherung AG, Unicredit Bank Austria AG and Erste Group Bank AG.

About Vienna Energy
Wien Energie is the largest regional energy provider in Austria. The company reliably supplies around two million people and 230,000 commercial and industrial facilities with energy. Electricity and heat production comes from combined heat and power, waste recycling and renewable energy such as solar, wind and hydropower as well as biomass. Wien Energie is massively expanding the share of renewable energy sources and making an active contribution to the path to climate neutrality in 2040.
