Hernalser traditional club will receive new main and new cemetery stands in the next two years Hernalser traditional club will receive new main and new cemetery stands in the next two years

Vienna (OTS) One of Vienna’s oldest sports facilities is being completely renovated: the Sport-Club Platz in the 17th district will be given a new look over the next two years. The main stand and the cemetery stand will be rebuilt according to modern and sustainable standards with extensive green roofs, and the south stand will be renovated. The total capacity after the renovation is 5,649 visitors for national games and 4,634 visitors for international games.

“As a city, we have taken the Sport Club Stadium project into our own hands and will implement a beautiful and sustainable stadium that will offer the Vienna Sport Club an excellent environment for its ambitions. The structural analysis showed that there was also an urgent need for action on the cemetery grandstand, so the project was expanded,” says City Councilor for Sports Peter Hacker.

In the new project, the focus will be on multifunctionality and multiple uses of the entire area. By designing according to the “UEFA Category 2” standard, it is possible to hold games for the women’s national soccer team and all youth national teams (women and men). “The main user of the stadium remains the Vienna Sports Club. In addition, the stadium can be used in a variety of ways. “I am pleased about the positive signals from the Ministry of Sports regarding the financial participation of the federal government and the ÖFB in staging games for its women’s national teams here,” said Hacker.

“We are happy and relieved that the stadium project at Sport-Club-Platz is finally being implemented. After difficult years and long negotiations, a sustainable, major solution was found together with the City of Vienna, in which the federal government will hopefully also be involved. Our focus has always been on providing our Viennese sports club with a sustainable home and thus long-term stability. Just in time for the 120th birthday of our traditional venue, we can hardly wait to play in the new stadium and add more successful chapters to our long history,” said WSC Section Head and Vice President David Krapf-Günther.

Reopening planned for spring 2026

District head Peter Jagsch: “I am very pleased that the oldest football field in Austria that is still used is now being comprehensively renovated and will in future be used by our traditional Hernals club, the Wiener Sport-Club, as well as by various Austrian national football teams. Above all, I am pleased that the ÖFB plans to field the extremely successful women’s national team at home games in this stadium. The football field in Dornbach is inseparably linked to our district and, thanks to the urgently needed modernization, remains a place where you can experience beautiful football festivals with the whole family in a friendly atmosphere. The timing of the completion of the renovation in two years is perfect, as we will begin construction of the U5 subway line in Hernals immediately afterwards and the new stadium will then also be connected to the Vienna subway network.”

Construction will begin after the current championship in the Regionalliga East has ended in June 2024 with the relocation and demolition of the main and cemetery stands. Structural completion is scheduled for the end of 2025 and full commissioning is scheduled for the second quarter of 2026. For the new construction and revitalization of the sports facility at Alszeile 19, the client Sport Wien is relying on the know-how of Vienna Infrastructure Project GmbH (WIP), which has already implemented numerous sports infrastructure projects.

Multifunctional and largely energy self-sufficient

Due to the functional orientation of the cabins and the renovation and enlargement of the playing field, international football and rugby games can also be held in the future. The construction of a contemporary head building between the two new stands ensures multiple uses with seminar and office space. The renovation of the south stand (“Blue Stand”) also includes a contemporary kiosk and new sanitary facilities.

A PV system with an output of around 100,000 kWh will be built on the roof of the main stand. In combination with the heat pump system, a very high level of self-sufficiency is possible. The electricity generated will be used for internal consumption and the surplus will be fed into the Vienna networks. The lighting system will be modernized and converted to LED lighting. Due to the large number of sustainable measures, “climate-active” certification is being sought, as with Sport Wien’s previous construction projects.

“The Sport Club stadium project not only expands the sporting infrastructure in Hernals, but also provides a diverse and appropriate stage for a wide range of sports, including traditional football as well as rugby and American football, which will benefit from it. The investment also shows the clear commitment to sport and sustainability in Vienna. The planned measures, including the photovoltaic system and the use of a heat pump, set a further example for climate protection in sport and are an essential component for a climate-neutral Vienna,” said Markus Ornig, NEOS Vienna sports spokesman.

“We have discussed the requirements and needs for a new building in numerous discussions with representatives of the club, the ÖFB, the Bundesliga and the district and are implementing a project with multifunctional use. The sports facility can also be used for international games and will largely produce the energy required itself,” says Anatol Richter, head of Sport Vienna.

“For Wien Holding and its group companies, sustainable work is not an empty word. We see ourselves as having a responsibility and obligation to make our contribution to achieving the goals of Vienna’s Smart City Strategy,” says Oliver Stribl, Wien Holding Managing Director. “That’s why heat pumps, photovoltaics, green roofs and everything that helps protect the climate are now a matter of course for us when we build schools, sports facilities or other infrastructure for the city of Vienna.”
