European Parliament calls for active fight against poverty and expansion of public services

Strasbourg (OTS) Today the European Parliament will vote on the priorities for the 68th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, 11-22. March from.

“Women and girls are disproportionately affected by poverty and the risk of social exclusion; current crises such as inflation, climate change and the consequences of the pandemic in particular are exacerbating existing inequalities. An estimated 383 million women and girls worldwide are considered poor. Balancing between having enough food, a heated apartment and meeting basic needs is everyday life for them,” explains Monika Vana, head of the Austrian Green Party delegation and member of the delegation to the CSW.

“With today’s resolution, the European Parliament urges the UN Commission on the Status of Women to address the systemic and structural inequalities faced by women with concrete structural measures, from minimum income to investments in social infrastructure to gender budgeting for public budgets and a feminist foreign policy,” said Vana.

“In view of the global crises and the dangers of the backlash against women, this year’s delegation, together with women’s rights activists, will work particularly hard to secure what has been achieved by previous women’s status commissions, especially in the areas of sexual and reproductive health and financing of women’s organizations, as well as to set new global standards “For example, in the areas of intersectionality, energy poverty and period poverty,” concludes Vana.

Background: This year’s 68th edition of the CSW will take place from March 11th to 22nd, 2024 in New York. In 2024, the focus of the CSW conference will be on the key topic of advancing gender equality and empowering all women and girls through poverty reduction, strengthening institutions and financing, taking a gender perspective into account. The European Parliament will be represented by a delegation from the Women’s Committee, of which Monika Vana has been a member since 2016.
