Occupational therapists run together for spinal cord research

Vienna (OTS) Yesterday the Wings For Life World Run took place worldwide. Ergotherapie Austria took part with its team for the third year in a row and was able to raise more than €1,500 in donations. I think it’s so nice how everyone really starts together and shows consideration for each other so that everyone can take part. Instead of sporting ambition, the focus is on participation and that is simply noticeable and observable! says Michaela Bartaun, Managing Director of Ergotherapie Austria, summarizing her participation in the Flagship Run in Vienna.

Occupational therapy for people with spinal cord injuries

A spinal cord injury drastically changes personal everyday life and the everyday life of family, friends and significant others. The spinal cord injury can lead to a limitation of the ability to act and the associated difficulties and barriers to actively and self-determined everyday life and to participate in social life. And this is exactly where occupational therapists come in: Getting dressed, brushing your teeth, putting on make-up, having breakfast with the family, taking the bus to the shops, going to university, going back to the job you learned or the opportunity to take up a beloved hobby like gardening again. Marion Hackl, President of Ergotherapie Austria, lists some examples of meaningful activities or goals in occupational therapy.

Regain maximum independence

In occupational therapy for people with spinal cord injuries, there is a special feature in the acute phase: In addition to the occupational therapy use of everyday activities and meaningful activities, positioning techniques and muscle training are specifically used to re-establish various gripping options for the fingers and hands. In particular, developing the so-called functional hand is an essential step on the way to the greatest possible independence and ability to act explains Marion Hackl. The use of aids such as splints and wheelchairs, as well as targeted training with the aids in everyday life, is also a central part of occupational therapy in general. In addition to providing aids, occupational therapists also analyze and adapt the living environment and workplace if necessary.

Occupational therapy

Occupational therapy is a legally regulated health profession and deals with meaningful activities in everyday life. This means everything that we all do – do – all day long wantalso must or what is expected of us. It’s about activities from all areas of life that are important to us, make up our everyday lives and give our lives meaning. The connection between meaningful activities, health and well-being is the focus of occupational therapy.
