Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi won the Rajya Sabha polls unopposed for the first time in her life. A total of three candidates including Sonia from the desert state of Rajasthan were elected to the Upper House unopposed. The remaining two are BJP’s Chunnilal Garcia and Madan Rathore.
On the other hand, BJP president JP Nadda was elected to the Rajya Sabha unopposed from Gujarat, the state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. BJP candidates won unopposed in all four Rajya Sabha seats in that state. The other three winners were Govindbhai Dholakia, Mayankbhai Naik and Yashwantsin Parmar.

56 Rajya Sabha members from 15 states are going to retire next April. Six-time Rajya Sabha member former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and BJP’s Bhupendra Yadav and Kirorilal Meena will retire from Rajasthan. In terms of MLA numbers, the BJP was expected to win two seats and the Congress one. Rajasthan will not go to polls on February 27 as no party has fielded additional candidates.
Basically Rajya Sabha votes are proportional to the number of MLAs in the state. MLAs elect Rajya Sabha members by voting their preferences. Sonia won seven Lok Sabha elections from 1999 to 2019. In addition to Rae Bareli, he won Ballari in Karnataka in the 1999 Lok Sabha elections.
He won the by-election from Rae Bareli in 2006 after resigning after winning the 2004 Lok Sabha polls over a ‘lucrative post’ controversy.
After winning the 2019 Lok Sabha polls in Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli, Sonia announced that due to physical reasons, it was not possible for her to stand for the Lower House of Parliament.
