A huge avalanche overwhelmed a group of Greek skiers and snowboarders in Borovets, and one of them died.
Several of those buried managed to get out, but one remained buried under the snow.
The signal was submitted to the Mountain Rescue Service (MSS) at around 14:13 by a witness from the group.
Later, rescuers found the body of the skier, who remained under the snow.
The avalanche had dimensions of about 150 meters “tongue” and nearly 30 meters wide.
Meanwhile, early in the morning it became clear in a bulletin that lightning struck several main lift facilities in Pamporovo. It is planned that the entire ski area will be restored and opened from tomorrow, Mariyan Belyakov, executive director of “Pamporovo” JSC, told BTA. Already at noon, it became clear that part of the area was already open.
During a thunderstorm that broke out in the mountain area in recent days, lightning struck the lift area. Most of the thunderstorms affected equipment in the Snezhanka Peak area, but other lift facilities were also damaged.
Part of the ski slopes in Pamporovo are not working after the heavy wet snow and are subject to processing. The resort warns skiers to obey all signs and plates in the ski area. The zone is expected to operate with normal business hours from Tuesday.
