Vice President of the Austrian Medical Association is calling for investments in European drug production after the pharmaceutical company’s plant in Orth an der Donau is closed.

Vienna (OTS) Harald Mayer, Vice President of the Austrian Medical Association and Federal Curia Chairman of the employed doctors, is shocked by the closure of a plant belonging to the pharmaceutical company Takeda in Orth an der Donau (Lower Austria): “That we simply don’t have it in Austria, one of the richest countries in the world manage to build and support strong and independent drug production is incomprehensible. A European strategy is missing here! Patients and doctors are suffering from the current delivery bottlenecks for almost 600 medicines, but politicians – especially Health Minister Rauch – are watching as locations are being lost, people are losing their jobs and health care is at risk.

“Responsibility for the supply of medication clearly lies with Minister Rauch. He finally has to act! This also includes the willingness to invest in the European production of supply-relevant medicines. Europe must finally become autonomous and independent of other markets when it comes to the supply of medicines – especially the Asian market. Bad news like that from Orth simply shouldn’t happen,” demands the BKAÄ chairman.

It was only in January of this year that the Austrian Medical Association called on the EU and the pharmaceutical industry in a joint resolution with the German Federal Medical Association to finally take decisive and joint action against drug supply bottlenecks. Mayer: “Politicians apparently prefer to set other priorities rather than take care of the patients.”
