A law was already passed last year with which an ‘evaluation board’ is to be installed under the Green Health Minister Rauch, which will decide who is ‘worthy’ of expensive therapy and who is not – a kind of death commission in the Ministry of Health,” said today the liberal health spokesman and chairman of the parliamentary health committee NAbg. Mag. Gerhard Kaniak.

In addition, the interests of the patients in this commission are only represented by one person from the patient advocacy group and that without the right to vote.” But the “icing on the cake” is that apparently just three of the 25 members can demonstrate pharmaceutical or medical expertise. But this is not the end of the impossibilities, because access to vital therapies can be delayed for months,” explained Kaniak.
“The decision-making authority for treatment must still lie freely and independently in the hands of the hospitals and the treating doctors. Any interference by social security and the ministry must be clearly rejected. After all, we are talking about people and fates here, not inanimate material goods! Especially in the area of life-threatening illnesses, the cure lies with medical specialists with their experience and expertise. Trying to restrict this is an impossibility,” emphasized Kaniak.
“All of this can only be described as inhumane and dangerous nonsense and would not only mean a death sentence for many sick patients, but would also make innovative product developments in the pharmaceutical industry and approval procedures in Austria impossible. Smoke is perverting health care and the Austrian health system into a social and moral fiasco. The voters will defuse this ticking time bomb in the Ministry of Health in just a few months and banish it to the ‘black book’ of Austrian history!” said the FPÖ health spokesman.
