2.5-meter-tall AI-controlled robot invites you to the largest apprentice event in the Donauzentrum – “Tech-savvy young people will find a training position here,” says Smodics-Neumann

Vienna (OTS) Vienna, February 16th, 2024 – Largest apprentice event in the shopping center: From February 20th to 24th, 2024, the “Technicians of Tomorrow” event will be entering its second round at Vienna’s Westfield Donau Zentrum, 22nd, main entrance Schrödingerplatz/Arena. “With mechatronics, automotive technology and metal technology, three sectors are united under one goal: to provide talented, technology-savvy girls and boys with the perfect apprenticeship,” says Maria Smodics-Neumann, head of the trade and craft division of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce (WK Vienna): “ We create a network between training companies and interested young people in order to find the perfect training place.”

Looking for girls for metal technology, automotive technology and mechatronics

Every day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., trainers and apprentices provide insights into the job profile and their daily work at numerous practical stations. Those interested can try out for themselves whether this job is something for them; If so, there is a direct line to the training company included. Smodics-Neumann: “The aim of the practice-oriented apprentice event is to provide information about the content and career opportunities in the metal technology, mechatronics and automotive technology apprenticeships. We don’t just want to get boys, but especially girls, excited about technology. And of course we also want to inform all parents: Because a job in the technical industry is future-proof.”

Apprentice casting with 2.5 meter tall AI robot

The opening with free admission will take place on February 20th at 10 a.m. The highlight will be a 2.5 meter tall AI-controlled robot inviting you to the opening show, further shows are planned daily at 4 p.m. Additional attraction: an electric racing car from the TU Vienna. Smodics-Neumann: “We make the most modern technology vulnerable. Those interested can get to know exciting innovations up close. We support the young people in finding out where their personal strengths lie.”

“We find the perfect apprenticeship”

“It is not easy for young people, especially girls in technology, to find a suitable apprenticeship,” says the guild master of the Vienna Mechatronics Engineers Peter Merten: “The Vienna Regional Guild of Mechatronics Engineers helps: If the young people’s strengths lie in technology, As a guild, we will network them directly with those training companies that are looking for apprentices.” Georg Ringseis, guild master of vehicle technology: “The state guild of vehicle technicians shows that the technologically high-quality profession of vehicle technician can appeal to everyone today. We go outside our factories to give the public an insight into the automotive technician’s career. The job is extremely interesting and varied. At the apprentice event we create a direct network between training companies and interested parties.”

14,796 apprentices in Vienna

In Vienna, the number of apprentices continues to develop positively: at the end of January, Viennese companies trained 14,796 apprentices, an increase of around four percent year-on-year. A third of all apprentices come from the trade and craft sector, the largest training sector. “The economy needs skilled workers, which makes the upward trend in apprenticeships, which is the most important channel for training young talent in many industries, all the more encouraging. The numbers also show that the image work is taking effect and the educational path is becoming more attractive again among young people,” says Smodics-Neumann.

About the apprenticeships metal technician, automotive technician, mechatronics engineer

Metal technician: They produce machines and machine parts, tools, steel construction and vehicle parts, containers, but also windows, facades, etc. from metals. They use a wide variety of techniques, such as forging, welding, soldering, bending, filing or machining techniques. The training lasts 3.5 years. After two years of basic training, the prospective specialists choose one of nine main modules – from vehicle construction to welding to safety technology. This main module was introduced a year and a half ago at the initiative of the industry. The Viennese companies are currently training 348 metal technology apprentices, the proportion of women is 15 percent (that’s 53 female apprentices). Every year, 120 metal technician apprenticeships are filled in trade, crafts, industry as well as in transport and transport companies.

Automotive technician: You work in vehicle workshops and carry out maintenance, repair and conversion work on motor vehicles. The technology in modern motor vehicles has changed significantly in recent years, and more and more vehicle electronics have been added to classic vehicle mechanics. Modern safety technology and the handling of electric vehicles are now also part of the job profile of automotive technicians. The training lasts 3.5 years. There are around 250 vacant apprenticeships in this profession every year in Vienna. With currently 900 apprentices – 32 of whom are women (3.6 percent) – the automotive technician profession is one of the strongest training occupations in Viennese companies.

Mechatronics engineer: Mechatronics – the combination of mechanics and electronics – can be found in aircraft autopilots as well as in the programmable washing machine or in modern industrial production systems. Mechatronics engineers build, install, maintain and repair such systems, components and parts. The apprenticeship is modular and lasts 3.5 to 4 years – depending on the number of training modules chosen. There are currently 291 prospective mechatronics engineers being trained in Viennese companies, 35 of whom are female (12 percent). Almost 100 mechatronics apprenticeships are filled every year – in trade and craft as well as in industry and in the transport and traffic sector.
