The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States has approved the world’s first vaccine against the chikungunya virus.

Publika.az informs that this was stated in the press release of the department.

It is mainly a virus transmitted by mosquito bites. Residents of Africa, tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia, as well as America and a number of regions, where mosquitoes are widespread, are more at risk of infection. But this disease can be found in new geographical areas. At least 5 million chikungunya infections have been reported over the past 15 years.

The document reads: “Today, the US Food and Drug Administration approved the first chikungunya vaccine, Ixchiq.”

According to the release, the drug was developed by Valneva Austria GmbH. It is approved for vaccination in people over 18 years of age who are at high risk of infection. The vaccine will be injected once into the muscle. The drug contains a weakened version of the virus and can cause fever-like symptoms that occur during illness.

It should be noted that there are no specific drugs to combat chikungunya. The treatment is mainly aimed at relieving the pain in the joints.
