Thousands of people came over the weekend to enjoy music, gastronomy, art and spaces for recreation and friendship. Great presence at the opening ceremony and in the various forums for reflection and debate.

“The century”. Santiago. 1/15/2023. Thousands of people arrived on Saturday, January 13 and Sunday, January 14 to Parque O’Higgins to participate in a varied cultural and political agenda, enjoy a huge space for recreation and friendship and access exquisite cuisine, music and art.

It was one more edition of the Hugs Festival, called and organized by the Communist Party, following a tradition that was born in the midst of the dictatorship, when communists met “in secret” in the grasses and trees of Parque O’ Higgins to celebrate the founding of the PC and give a New Year’s hug.

There were restaurant tents with delicious food, original dishes, typical of Chile and also of Cuba, good drinks, beverages, juices, the inevitable choripanes and empanadas, the mote con huesillo heladito, the mojitos, all with good music and some political talks. . Several regional and communal centers of the Communist Party, the installation of the Communist Youth and two Cuban food tents stood out.

In the afternoons we enjoyed music with La Sonora by Tommy Rey, Javiera Parra Trío, Inti-Illimani, Musical Víctor sin Víctor Jara, Ricardo Silva and the Ecole Qua (ex-Republicans of the cueca), Murga La Lucha, Los Cadillacs Pirata and Pascuala Ilabaca.

Dozens of stalls were set up where crafts, posters, guayaberas, metalwork, graphics, paintings, music, books, magazines, newspapers, calendars, everything were displayed and sold. There were stands of solidarity with Palestine and Cuba, from the groups of Relatives of Executed Politically Executed and Disappeared Detainees, from the newspaper El Siglo, from “Communist Women”, users of Prais, from Ceiler (Luis Emilio Recabarren Study Center), from organizations social, union and political.

In the forums, which took place on Saturday and Sunday mornings and afternoons, interesting and motivating topics were discussed, such as “citizen demands and the legislative agenda”, “the union movement debates and projections”, “the pension reform and its social and political urgency”, “communication and challenges for social transformation”, “housing and the city”, “the challenges of political youth”, “the challenges and integration of left-wing and progressive governments in Latin America”, “ leftist campaigns in times of social boredom”, “building safer territories for a good life”, “women and politics, the conservative siege in the ideological struggle”, “the policy of public transport and its modernization and massification in regions”, and the “fight for the self-determination of peoples and world peace.”

There were several emotional moments and enormous affection when the president of the Communist Party, Guillermo Teillier, who died a few months ago, and who was a participant and promoter of the Hugs Festival, was remembered since he arrived at the park during the years of the dictatorship. even in the last editions where he visited the forums, the tents, the food places and the exhibition and sales stands. On Sunday, a reissue of his book “Carrizal or the Decisive Year” was presented.

Joy, dancing, optimism, hugs, festivities, friendship, conversation, good eating and drinking reigned, all in the midst of immense heat, where the sun beat down, but everyone with an immense spirit and valuing the continuity of the Hugs Festival, one of the classic events in the country. Because they say they come in several regions.
