In Armenia, the conflict between the church and the government is on the open level. And the main motive in this conflict is the Karabakh issue. II Garegin said that Armenia is facing the danger of internal division. He claimed that they “lost” Karabakh because of this. And he called all Armenians to fight against Azerbaijan. Considering that the church plays a key role in Armenian terrorism and claims, it seems that Garegin’s call may cause a serious problem to Azerbaijan-Armenia peace talks. Although the Pashinyan government did not accept Garegin’s position, this call of the church indicates that Armenian revanchism will continue. Even if a peace agreement is signed, it is not excluded that Armenian claims will continue.
Reserve General Yücel Karauz told Publika.az about the issueIn his statement, he noted that churches and religious institutions in the West, including Christianity, Catholicism, and Orthodoxy, have been involved in politics for centuries:
“This is an inevitable fact. In any Muslim geography, if a religion or a religious leader expresses an opinion on politics, there are different assessments with very different Islamophobic approaches. But this is a common practice in the West. Therefore, the activity of the Armenian church in Armenia against Pashinyan to prevent peace is the last attempt of the West to combine this revanchist feeling with the “Karabakh clan”. In the four years since we entered 2024, they’ve tried all kinds of things. They failed and now in one last attempt they are trying to do it through the church, through religion. It seems that the Armenian Church cooperates with the murderers, the “Karabakh clan”.
The political scientist added that this actually means a possible new development scenario in terms of internal political turmoil in Armenia:
“But the Armenian people will no longer come to these games. After that, no power will be able to lift the Armenian politicians, elite and people from the peace table. Some powers may try, but it won’t be easy. If they want to do something, they will have to pay for it. Our position is to continue on our way, demanding our rights, regardless of what the church, the old clans and France say.”
