SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico.- A research project on migration, developed by the Department of Psychology of the Faculty of Sociology, at the Universidad de Oriente, revealed that Cuban children have at the heart of their desire to leave the country.

The research, conducted by sociologists, educators, journalists, social and economic communicators, and psychiatrists, delved into the migration phenomenon based on various age groups and conducted surveys in five schools to see how these movements to other countries affected the child population.

In a psychological dynamic of the five wishes, applied to children’s groups, the specialists concluded that the center of the children’s responses was “to leave the country,” as reported to the local newspaper. Sierra Maestra.

Raida Margarita Dusu Contreras, head of the Department of Psychology, attached to the Faculty of Sociology, commented that this latent desire permeates all aspects of the lives of children and also adolescents.

Psychopathological repercussions

Among the consequences of waiting to leave the country is lack of motivation to study. Furthermore, when visualizing oneself in other territories during the stage of forming one’s personality, identity confusion occurs.

Because the desire manifests itself early on, from the school stage, when these immigration plans begin to be postponed, “frustrations and conflicts appear, with psychopathological repercussions,” added the expert. .

“Traditionally, one of the two members could be absent from mom and dad, but someone took care of everything. Now they both leave and leave the children in the care of another relative or neighbor. Sometimes under the tutelage of a grandfather, who needs to be cared for and is left in charge. An uncle, cousin… is not a reference of authority,” he indicated.

The phenomenon also entails episodes of depression, anxiety and discord with family members in Cuba or abroad, if the possibilities of departure are delayed.

Fantasy as a refuge

The researchers also identified a defense mechanism developed by children and young people, as a result of this anxiety about emigrating.

In general, the desire to emigrate or the expectation to do so affects the dynamics and structure of the family and the construction of an identity. “The functioning and life cycle within the basic cell of Cuban society are being altered,” the investigation found.

Escaping from a country in crisis influences other areas that change social dynamics. In Cuba, there has been evidence of an aging population, low fertility, a decrease in economic activity rates and losses of qualified personnel, said the Coordinator of the Provincial Demographic Observatory.

In just the last two years, Cuba has had more people emigrate to the United States than those born in the territory.

The data indicates that almost 425,000 migrants of Cuban origin have arrived in the United States in the last two fiscal years. The figure is equivalent to approximately 4% of the Island’s population.

However, only 95,403 people have been born in 2022 and 99,096 in 2021, according to a publication in the Health Statistical Yearbook of the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP).
