Chancellor, FPÖ boss and green club leader skipped the debate on professional conditions in nursing – SPÖ is the only party that wants to improve working conditions in nursing

Vienna (OTS/SK) Due to the excessive staff shortage in the nursing sector, closed wards, unoccupied beds and duty rosters that can hardly be created as soon as just one person falls ill have long been a bitter reality in Austria. The SPÖ has made this nursing crisis the central issue in the National Council today. ÖVP Chancellor Nehammer, FPÖ leader Kickl and club leader of the Green Maurer immediately showed their lack of respect for the care workers by staying away from the debate. SPÖ club chairman Philip Kucher: “The difference between Chancellor Nehammer and a nurse is that the Chancellor can simply send the Youth State Secretary if he doesn’t feel like doing his job. Today it shows: Nehammer, Kickl and Maurer don’t care about the nurses!” ****

The ÖVP and FPÖ in particular have shone in the past with empty reports or unrealistic ideas when it came to solving the burning problems in the field of care. 45 percent of all nursing employees think about quitting every single day. The reasons: the load, pressure and stress are too high and there is no ability to plan. Instead of addressing the question of how professional conditions can be improved so that more people come into care again, the ÖVP presented a single idea in the Chancellor’s speech, which was prepared for months: to bring more people from abroad. This blank report from the ÖVP was only bettered by the FPÖ. While the reality of work in the nursing professions is characterized by permanent overtime or overtime, which often leads to burnout, long-term sick leave and early retirement, the FPÖ “shone” with a “special” idea: people in nursing simply want to work even more overtime. Kucher: “The FPÖ and ÖVP have not taken a single measure to improve professional conditions. Not a single word of appreciation. Instead of good pay, overtime should be given tax breaks. Instead of thinking about how to get more people interested in the nursing profession again, we should simply bring more people from abroad and squeeze even more out of the already exhausted people.”

The SPÖ is contrasting all of this with its demands, which should lead to more people going into care again:

  • Pay for nursing training – like with the police
  • Exempting people who want to go into nursing from training costs
  • Guarantee a permanent job for every person who goes into care
  • Improve working conditions – through personnel requirements planning, roster security, gradual reduction in working hours, consistent additional vacation week
  • Respect even after the nursing profession – opening up access to the hard work pension.
