At least 19 people were killed when a section of a highway in China collapsed and several cars fell into a ditch. The tragic accident happened in the country’s southeastern Guangdong province on Wednesday (May 1).
Part of a highway between Meizhou city in Guangdong province and Dabu county collapsed around 2 a.m. local time, state broadcaster CCTV said.
At least 18 cars fell into the pit. There were a total of 49 passengers in these cars.

CCTV reported that as of 11:45 a.m. local time, 19 people have been confirmed dead. The remaining 30 people are under treatment in the hospital. However, it is reported that they are not in danger at the moment.
In a video circulating on social media, several cars were piled up in craters in the collapsed section of the highway. The smoke from them is spreading around.
Another video shows a pile of cars on fire. However, it was not possible to immediately verify the authenticity of these videos.

According to CCTV, around 500 people have been dispatched to the scene to assist in the rescue operation. These include people from departments managing public safety, emergency response, firefighting and mine rescue.
A section of the S12 highway was closed in both directions and motorists were advised to take alternative routes, local authorities said in a notice.
