Regular dental checkups and professional hygiene can detect oral cancer at an early stage.

Publika.az Michael Ho, Honorary Senior Lecturer in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Leeds, told The Conversation2a about this.

Around nine thousand people are diagnosed with oral cancer every year in the UK, of which less than six thousand survive (more than 3,000 die). However, when detected at an early stage, which is relatively easy to treat, more than 90% of patients survive.

Oral cancer symptoms can be seen by a dentist. Individuals should pay attention to mouth sores that do not heal within three weeks, as well as lumps in the mouth, jaw, or neck that persist for more than three weeks.

Red or white patches in the mouth, numbness in the tongue or other areas of the mouth, loose teeth, and a sore throat or hoarseness lasting more than six weeks can also indicate cancer.

About half of oral cancer cases are preventable. Risk factors include smoking and alcohol. In addition, human papilloma virus damage to oral cells can also cause cancer.
