The government is working to ensure the health care of every mother and child in the country said the State Minister of Health Dr. Rokeya Sultana.

He said, we have set up 5,500 health and family welfare centers at the union level to ensure healthcare for mothers and children. We plan to hire four midwives at each center to provide round-the-clock services. It is expected that 20,000 midwives will be recruited within the next two years.

He said this while addressing the 57th session of the Commission on Population and Development, which began on April 29 at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The session will end tomorrow, May 3.

The State Minister for Health said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is working tirelessly to ensure the good health of all mothers and children across the country by meeting the goals of the international conference and achieving the SDGs.

During this, he highlighted the various steps and programs taken by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to ensure maternal and newborn health, family planning and adolescent health and welfare. He also mentioned the National Adolescent Health Strategy Paper (2017-2030) and the National Action Plan for its implementation in Bangladesh.

Dr. Rokeya Sultana said, we are working to prevent child marriage and violence against women and girls. Besides, the government has taken the initiative to distribute free sanitary napkins to about 50 lakh girls studying in class VI to XII.

The State Minister highlighted the various achievements of Bangladesh in the health sector including reduction of maternal mortality and birth rate, digitalization of health information system including health management and infrastructure development, increasing the number and professional skills of doctors and health workers. The state minister also called for increased international cooperation and partnership to address capacity gaps in developing countries.

The Minister of State for Health participated in UNFPA’s signature side event on Maternal Mortality held on the sidelines of the main session. There he described Bangladesh’s success in reducing maternal mortality by employing adequate and trained midwives in every corner of the country. He also participated in another side event on implementation of the ICPD program organized by South Africa, UNFPA and PPD.

In addition to participating in these events, the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, the UK’s Vice Minister for Development Cooperation; He held a bilateral meeting with UNFPA’s Regional Representative for the Asia Pacific Region and attended a round table meeting on ICPD-30 Global Dialogue organized by the Vice Minister of the Netherlands.

The 57th session of the Population and Development Commission, which started on April 29, will end on May 3.
