Jean TODT from the UN on road safety in Benin: “We have seen big changes”

Jean TODT is on behalf of the Secretary General of the United Nations, responsible for road safety. As such, he was sent to Benin at the head of a delegation to observe and assess what is being done to protect populations against the increase in cases of deaths on our roads.

A working session brought together this Tuesday March 5, 2024 around the special envoy of the Secretary General of the United Nations, the Minister of State in charge of Development and the Coordination of Government Action, Abdoulaye BIO TCHANÉ, his colleagues Alassane SEIDOU of the Interior and Public Security, Eléonore YAYI LADEKAN of Higher Education and Scientific Research, executives from the Ministries of Health, Living Environment and Transport, the directors general of the CNSR and the ANATT…

At the end of this meeting, Jean TODT declared: “ Yesterday, after getting off the plane, we took a tour of the city and we noticed big changes… We must stay the course for a continued reduction in cases of deaths on the roads of Benin… the road kills. It is obvious. We must continue our efforts, strictly enforce the texts… ».

The UN man also and above all placed emphasis on awareness raising which must also be required and on the wearing of approved helmets by road users.

Measures taken by the Government to protect the population against road accidents

The assessments of the special envoy of the Secretary General of the United Nations follow the presentation by Minister Bio TCHANE of the measures taken by the Government to protect the population against road accidents. We retain, among other measures, those relating to:

  • the strict obligation to wear safety helmets by the motorcycle driver and his passenger,
  • wearing a seat belt on board the vehicle,
  • respecting the speed limit on the roads through the activation of radars,
  • the construction of intelligent type road infrastructures in several municipalities of the country
  • the ratification by Benin of the African Road Safety Charter
  • Benin’s accession to key road safety conventions

The results, according to Bio TCHANE, showed that the statistics which reported around 700 deaths as a result of road accidents are decreasing. Alassane SEIDO, the Minister of the Interior and Public Security, for his part, reassured the UN special envoy that the Government will work shortly to control the quality of helmets, he recalls, the The lives of citizens are precious. Measures are being taken in universities to strengthen road safety, added Minister Eléonore YAYI LADEKAN.

According to gouv.bj, the United Nations delegation will carry out field visits, notably to the Abomey-Calavi reference hospital to further appreciate the government’s commitment to providing more adequate care to victims.
