A supporter of the reestablishment of relations of good cooperation with Niger, Benin, through the voice of its President, noted, from the beginning of December 2023, the disastrous consequences of the measures taken against this country.

A pioneer in the lifting of sanctions which became effective at the end of last February, Benin has continued to increase acts of goodwill towards its neighbor in the Sahel.

The Beninese Minister of Foreign Affairs did not remain on the sidelines of the contacts reestablished and maintained with the Nigerien authorities by President Patrice TALON.

Already at the end of December, the General Directorate of the Autonomous Port of Cotonou lifted the measure suspending imports of goods to Niger.

On February 25, just a few days after the lifting of sanctions against Niger by ECOWAS, Benin reopened its borders with its neighbor.
Concerned about the smooth running of the Nigerien oil export program via the pipeline which runs throughout its territory, Benin welcomed this week a delegation of officials from the Nigerien customs administration.

In a memo dated March 6, 2024 and signed by himself, Bart Jozef Yohan Van Eenoo, Director General of the Autonomous Port of Cotonou, made public new support measures for the benefit of port stakeholders, particularly Nigerien economic operators in within the framework of the collection of their goods. (See below the press release and the summary table of the new measures in favor of Nigerien carriers).

Niamey delays the decisive step!
The authorities in Niamey, intransigent since the start of the economic-political disagreement with neighboring countries, particularly with Benin, have, for several days, been insensitive to all these acts of goodwill carried out by Cotonou,… but are not yet doing the decisive step.

At the end of the said visit, it was announced for Thursday March 7, the arrival of another delegation of Nigerien officials. For reasons not yet known, this meeting no longer took place.
On the evening of Sunday March 10, several media announced that Niger had finally taken the plunge by opening its border with Benin. False alarm, the barriers are still in place according to witnesses present in Malanville.
