GLOBAL 2000 welcomes the EU Commission’s proposal. Attempts by the plastics industry to delay must be rejected.

Vienna/Brussels (OTS) The EU Commission beats a ban on the chemical bisphenol A (BPA) in food contact materials. GLOBAL 2000 welcomes this important step: “A BPA ban is essential! “All people in Europe are currently consuming amounts of BPA in their diet that many times exceed the health-acceptable level and are absolutely avoidable,” says Helmut Burtscher-Schaden, GLOBAL 2000 biochemist. The public consultation for the proposed ban on BPA and other bisphenols in food contact materials closes tomorrow, March 8, 2024. GLOBAL 2000 has submitted a statement.

EU’s first ban on BPA in baby pacifiers

GLOBAL 2000 had already examined various plastic items for harmful substances in 2009 and – completely surprisingly – in almost all commercially available baby pacifiers large amounts of BPA proven and subsequently achieved an Austria-wide ban on BPA in baby pacifiers and teething rings. Back then, GLOBAL 2000 pointed out that independent scientific studies suggested a health guideline for the acceptable daily intake of BPA for humans that was orders of magnitude lower. With a long delay, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) renewed its risk assessment of BPA last year and increased the health reference value of BPA by five powers of ten lowered.

Implement the ban now without delay!

BPA can still be found in the coatings of cans, in coated food packaging, plastic drinking bottles and containers and other food contact materials. “The EU Commission must now ensure that the BPA ban takes effect as quickly as possible and leads to a noticeable reduction in the burden on consumers. Attempts by the industry to undermine or delay this important measure through exceptions and transitional periods – as can be seen in some of the statements already available – must be clearly rejected,” Burtscher-Schaden demands in conclusion and advocates a general ban on BPA consumer items.
