Vienna (OTS) – The Hayek Institute refers to the urgently needed reforms in the health system in Barbara Kolm’s most recent policy brief: In “LEAVE NO ONE BEHIND: How to enhance health outcomes via non-invasive policies in Austria” (FOR ALL: How low-threshold offers improve general health improved in Austria.), the institute appeals to political decision-makers to pursue evidence-based, non-invasive strategies in order to significantly improve the general health of the population and thus make an important contribution to maintaining the place of work and business.
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) represent one of the biggest health challenges in Austria, accounting for 91% of deaths in 2019. Many of these diseases are due to preventable risk factors, including unhealthy diets such as excess sugar, fat and salt, as well as the consumption of common stimulants such as alcohol and a generally unhealthful lifestyle with unbalanced physical activity. High-risk sports with a high potential for accidents put a strain on the system, as do the consequences of widespread lack of exercise. The Hayek Institute emphasizes the need for a change in health policy that focuses on prevention and health promotion.
Barbara Kolm, President of the Hayek Institute, explains: “Our strategy must be to reach every individual and to promote health through low-threshold offers, cost-effective measures. It’s not just about preventing illnesses, but also about increasing health awareness , which enables individual responsibility and informed decisions.”
The institute proposes to strengthen partnerships between the public and private sectors and promote innovations that promote healthier lifestyles. By promoting alternatives with lower health risks and improving the health literacy of the population, a significant contribution to reducing NCDs can be made in Austria.
Kolm adds: “Collaboration between the public and private sectors is crucial to develop innovative solutions that improve the health of the population. By promoting lower-risk alternatives and strengthening the personal responsibility of each individual, we can lay the foundation for a healthier Austria create.”
The Hayek Institute calls for a pragmatic approach to health policy, based on data and evidence, rather than interventionist ideology with bans and constraints. By implementing these non-invasive measures, significant improvements in the healthcare system can be achieved, which not only improve the quality of life of citizens, but also contribute to Austria’s economic performance.
