Vienna (OTS) – Now in the spring, the so-called District Hunter Days are taking place, to which all hunters in a district are invited. The VGT takes this as an opportunity to draw attention to the demands of the referendum for a federal hunting law. The release of pheasants for shooting is the focus of criticism. This was newly regulated in Styria, but not abolished. There are still many areas where large numbers of breeding pheasants are released just for fun and then shot again a few months later.
Hunting is widely viewed by the population as a necessity to ensure the balance of wildlife populations. The example of releasing pheasants to shoot shows that this is largely more of a fairy tale than the truth. In many areas of Austria, bred pheasants are released from livestock farms in order to supposedly support the population. But a large part was released for launch a few months later. And this repeats itself year after year.
David Richter from the VGT has been discussing the targeted release of pheasants in Styria for years and has observed countless hunts: “Pheasants are nice and easy targets for hunters. In reality, these poor animals are only released so that a large number of shootings can occur -enthusiasts can enjoy killing. This has absolutely nothing to do with nature conservation, quite the opposite: huge amounts of lead shot are shot every year and many pheasants are not killed immediately, but only seriously injured. There is also the problem of non-compliant pheasants Breeding. Those in charge like to turn a blind eye here, and advertisements come to nothing. The VGT is calling for an end to the release of pheasants for shooting.“
Prof. Dr. Rudolf Winkelmayer, proponent of the referendum for a federal hunting law, is also critical of trophy shows: “From a mandatory trophy show, citizens would expect full transparency and self-critical questioning regarding hunting – especially the killing of animals – and not a display characterized by vanity of trophies.”
On Saturday, March 9th, 2024, VGT protests will take place in the Southeast Styria district from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. in front of the Komm-Halle in Leitersdorf and in Weizberg from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in front of the Ederer Inn. The visitors to the District Hunters’ Days should primarily be confronted with criticism of the pheasant release hunt.
