Gert Jan Kupman, director of the European Commission’s Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy, warned the Georgian authorities about the consequences of adopting the law on foreign agents.

According to Kupman, the law on foreign agents is unacceptable and will seriously hinder Tbilisi’s hopes of joining the European Union.
Earlier, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said that Georgia risked its prospects for membership in the European Union and NATO due to its anti-Western rhetoric and the draft law on foreign agents. The spokesperson of the State Department believes that the draft law, which caused mass protests in Georgia, was “inspired” by Moscow.
Rati Ionatamishvili, a member of the ruling “Georgian Dream” party, said in response that Tbilisi acts in the interests of national security: “It is clear that we carefully read the statements of our friendly countries, but first of all we act as society and our national security require.”
