Elections 2024
Peer –
In the Flemish elections of June 9, municipal councilor Peter Smeets from Peer will draw the list of BoerBurgerBelangen (BBB).
Environmental expert Peter Smeets sits as an independent in the Peer municipal council and joined BBB at the end of last year. He will top the Flemish list on June 9. “There is a breach of trust between politicians and citizens. We want to change that with the BBB. We really want to help implement policy, but we will focus on people, regardless of whether it is a citizen, farmer or entrepreneur,” Smeets said at the time. In his own words, he entered politics because, as a professional environmental technologist, he regularly observed how ignoring scientific laws leads to bad legislation and bad policy and that the government itself does not always comply with its own legislation.
Dairy farmer Maxime Roelands from Tongeren will push the Flemish BBB list. As a representative of seeds for professional agriculture and as a member of several associations, he says he knows well the challenges the sector faces with the current nitrogen decree and the nature restoration law. (yl)
