An engineer who works at Paris City Hall was on a train at the Gare du Nord heading to Creil on Monday evening. He had placed his bag in the luggage rack above his head. The man’s train was delayed and when he wanted to transfer to another train, he noticed that his bag was missing.

The bag may have had sentimental value to the man, but its contents were undoubtedly more important. His laptop and two USB sticks contained very sensitive data: the local police’s plans for the security of the Olympic Games next summer. The local railway police have started an investigation.

The Games will take place from July 26 to August 10 in the French City of Light. In addition to the 35,000 employees of security services who have to keep everything running smoothly, Parisian mayor Anne Hidalgo also plans to deploy two thousand police officers.
