Vienna (OTS) For some, the new year started with “Veganuary” – the plan to eat vegan for a month. “Austria eats informed” picks up on this trend and focuses on plant-based substitute products in the first 2024 newsletter issue. But what do the terms “plant-based”, “vegan” or “vegetarian” actually mean? Can the alternative made from soy also be called “schnitzel”? Why are meat substitutes not so easy to produce? And what innovations are there in this area? “Austria eats informed” provides the facts. Sabine Brandl, the first woman to head the Viennese confectionery manufacturer Manner, also talks about innovations. It provides insights into the strategies and challenges of the traditional company. And: In the quiz about alternative vegan products, there are exciting questions to test your own knowledge.

Vegan, vegetarian, plant-based – simply explained

The range of food available in Austria is as diverse as the preferences of consumers. By providing information about the absence of animal ingredients, food manufacturers can help with individual product selection. But are there uniform criteria for claims such as “vegan” or “plant-based”? And can substitute products for milk, meat and eggs also be called that? From “oat milk” to “vegetable salmon” to “vegan schnitzel” – not every name for animal products is allowed. The current newsletter reveals which terms are reserved for the “original”.
