Alejandro Osorio is the new national road champion

Put Alejandro Osorio’s name on the list of promises to promote Colombian cycling internationally. The Paisa rider managed to be crowned the new national road champion after first crossing the test for elite professionals, beating recognized names such as Egan Bernal and Sergio Higuita.

In a total route of 211 kilometers, Osorio won one of the most coveted titles for the Colombian cyclist and established his name among other pillars of international sport. The test began in the municipality of Corrales, passing through Vadocastro, Sogamoso, Duitama, Paipa and when it arrived in Tunja, a six-lap circuit was established to later see the finish line in Chivata.

This entire route was completed by Osorio, a GW Erco Shimano team rider, in a total time of 4 hours, 53 minutes and 23 seconds. Sergio Higuita from Bora-Hansgrohe crossed the finish line in second place with a difference of 4 seconds before the first and Egan Bernal, from INEOS Grenadiers, completed the podium with a third place and the bronze medal.

Within his statements as the new champion, Osorio stated that he fulfilled a dream with this title, but that he is already thinking about his new goal: the Tour Colombia 2024.

“This is my dream, fulfilled at 25 years old. I am ambitious, when I complete one, I go for another, the closest is a stage of the Tour Colombia and God wants it to be so. I feel good, I feel strong, despite coming from Táchira a little sick, I trained judiciously.”

The Tour Colombia 2.1 of 2024, scheduled to begin on February 6 in Paipa and end on February 11 in Bogotá, represents a milestone in the history of cycling competitions at the national and international level.

This event, which stands out for its return to the calendar of the International Cycling Union (UCI), is emerging not only as a challenge for the participants, but also as a global showcase for local talent in cycling like that shown by Osorio.

Originally from El Carmen del Viboral, Alejandro Osorio Carvajal began his path in cycling at the age of 19 and only needed two seasons in Colombia to make the leap to European cycling, signing for Nippo Vini Fantini of Italy in the UCI Continental category.

With this team he managed to win a stage of the under-23 Giro d’Italia and became the Tour de l’Avenir champion. His good performances led him to sign for the Spanish team Caja Rural in 2020, a team that is part of the second highest category of the UCI, being a ProTeam.

There he managed to achieve good results in the Semana Coppi e Bartali, in the Tour of the Alpes and got into the top-10 overall in the Vuelta a Asturias. It was two years of great performances that led him to complete the team ladder, finally pedaling in the famous UCI WorldTour with the Bahrain-Victorious jerseys in 2022.

At that point Osorio experienced one of the most complicated points of his career as a professional, since he was separated from the team due to some “apparent” disciplinary problems.
