Austria (OTS)

  • Current survey among 3,000 users shows: Austria is a country of do-it-yourselfers
  • According to the survey, most furnishing projects are currently being planned in Tyrol, Vienna and Styria
  • The majority of people help redesign or re-furnish their own four walls themselves – women are just as energetic as men
  • The joy of DIY is the decisive factor in picking up the hammer yourself

A little more than a month of the new year is already over – and that means some of the motivated New Year’s resolutions, from eating healthier to exercising regularly, may also be a thing of the past. Time to think about the nicer things in life: the summer vacation, for example – or the new kitchen and the redesign of the living room? willhaben determined this and much more as part of a current user survey in which almost 3,000 people took part.

“Imagine if you unexpectedly had 10,000 euros at your disposal tomorrow…”

This shows that a beautiful home is more important to many people living in Austria than a special vacation. When asked “what they would do with 10,000 euros that they unexpectedly had at their disposal,” 44.1 percent named redesigning their own four walls and 28.7 percent named a dream vacation. The remaining 27.2 percent could not decide between the two options. Users from smaller cities in particular, and especially from Styria, Tyrol and Salzburg, would be more likely to choose to redesign their own home, as would respondents with their own children. On the other hand, people in a relationship without children and people from Vienna and Burgenland would primarily board the plane for their dream vacation.

Austria: Land of do-it-yourselfers

In fact, around a third of the 3,000 users surveyed are currently planning to redesign or refurnish one or more living areas. Most of the projects are currently planned in Tyrol, Vienna and Styria and most often concern the living room (39.5 percent), the bathroom (32.5 percent) and an outdoor area (balcony, terrace, garden) (26.5 percent ).

In any case, Austrians are not afraid to get their hands dirty. When asked whether they planned to get support, only 8.8 percent said they would leave the planned redesign completely in someone else’s hands. Meanwhile, 40.7 percent declare that they will help out themselves despite support, and another 42.5 percent will even implement the project entirely on their own. Contrary to persistent stereotypes, women are in no way inferior to men and just as often take matters into their own hands.

Lots of hands, quick finish

All those who decide on support usually get help from their partner (59.5 percent) – followed by craftsmen (37.7 percent) and the child or children (26.5 percent). At the end of the day, how independently a project can be implemented often depends on the work planned. According to the survey results, users would leave certain DIY activities – especially laying tiles (59.8 percent), laying floors (41.1 percent) and painting walls (22.9 percent) – exclusively to professionals. However, almost a third of all those surveyed also believe that there is no activity that only professionals are capable of and therefore do everything themselves.

More than half of those surveyed enjoy doing DIY

There are many reasons for picking up the tool yourself. And so 71.4 percent of all those surveyed carry out DIY work themselves “because it is cheaper”. But: At 56.6 percent, more than half do this (also) “because they enjoy it”, and around a fifth also do it “because it’s faster”. According to the survey, the most passionate DIY enthusiasts are at home in the federal states of Lower Austria, Salzburg and Tyrol, where most respondents said they take things into their own hands because they enjoy it.
