Vice Mayor Christoph Wiederkehr is focusing on sport when funding projects in the LGBTIQ area this year

Vienna (OTS) “Vienna was awarded the contract by the European Gay and Lesbian Sport Federation (EGLSF) to host the EuroGames 2024. The EuroGames Vienna 2024 association will organize this major queer sports event from July 17th to 20th with funding from the City of Vienna,” says Vice Mayor Christoph Wiederkehr happily. “That’s why we have also declared sport as a focus for Queer Small Projects Pot 2024 in order to spread the topic even more broadly into the community and into society.”

“The area of sports in particular, and that starts with school sports, is not very inclusive when it comes to people with different sexual orientations and gender identities. There are a lot of stupid jokes, often strict gender separations and little sensitivity to the fact that sport is of course also important for LGBTIQ people – in terms of health and socially. Our aim is therefore to particularly support projects that make barriers for LGBTIQ people in the field of sport visible and reduce them sustainably,” says Wolfgang Wilhelm, chairman of the advisory board and head of the WASt-Vienna anti-discrimination office for LGBTIQ matters.

Of the 22 projects submitted this year, the advisory board awarded funding to eight projects. These are the pedagogical project “Queer Comics in Working with Young People” by the EfEU association, the development and implementation of city tours in Leopoldstadt by the QWien association, the “QBW* Grow-Togehter” workshop series by the Queer Business Women association, and the conference and workshop series “Vienna is burning” by the Future Freedom Project association, the bike polo tournament with “Queering Polo” supporting program by the Bikepolo Vienna association, the creative workshop series “Scissors Paper Rock” by the HUFE-Raum für Kunst und theatrical gatherings association, the “International Quadball anniversary tournament” by the Sportclub Vienna Vanguards association and a skating workshop series FLINTA* people by the association to create skate areas for A-gender, non-binary, trans and inter people, lesbians and women.
