Eye Health and Diseases Specialist Op. Dr. Adnan Ipçioğlu said that sudden increases and decreases in blood sugar affect the blood vessels in the retina, which is the nerve layer of the eye, causing diabetic retinopathy.

Publika.az reports that the cases of diabetic retinopathy have increased, especially in people who have had diabetes for more than 10 years.

The doctor added that there is a risk of eye disease for all diabetic patients:

“Everyone with diabetes should have a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year. A person suffering from diabetes for a long time has an increased risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. In particular, the examination of the fundus ensures the detection of changes in the retina at an early stage and provides the patient with the opportunity for successful treatment.

Early detection is the key to successful treatment. Complaints of blurred vision are common in the early stages of diabetes. This may be due to high blood glucose levels rather than retinopathy. It may take several weeks for blood glucose levels to normalize, and when control is achieved, blurred vision disappears.”
