Indian actress also victim of ‘very scary’ viral deepfake

Artificial intelligence that easily superimposes celebrities’ faces onto different bodies has become a dangerous and powerful weapon.

The latest victim of artificial intelligence is Bollywood actress Rashmika Mandana. Reacting to a ‘deepfake’ video going viral on the internet, he has demanded action against the makers.

On Sunday, a video went viral on the internet in which a woman resembling Rashmika entered an elevator dressed in black.

It was later revealed that the clip was created by an artificial intelligence that replaces a person’s likeness with another person.

Deep faxes are often created to spread false information or defame specific individuals. In the aforementioned deepfake video, actress Rashmika Mandana’s face is superimposed on another woman’s body.

According to Times of India News, the original video is of British-born Indian social media personality Zara Patel entering an elevator wearing a black workout outfit.

In the viral video, Zara’s face has been replaced with a face resembling Rashmika’s using artificial intelligence (AI).

The video has received a lot of reaction from internet users including actor Amitabh Bachchan. Rashmika Mandana not only gave her reaction on this but also demanded action against those responsible.

The Indian actress, who was inspired by the deepfake technology, wrote on the social networking site Instagram that ‘I am very sad to share this and I want to talk about my deepfake video that is going viral online. Honestly, it’s very scary, not just for me, but for all of us who are at risk from the misuse of technology today.’

On X (formerly Twitter), Rashmika wrote, ‘Today as a woman and an actress, I am grateful to my family, friends and well-wishers who are my safety and support system. But if this happened to me when I was in school or college, I can’t even imagine how I would have dealt with it. Before more of us are affected by this kind of identity theft, we must address it as a society and urgently.’

Zara Patel, the creator of the original video, has also expressed concern about the future of women in her response to the recent deepfake.

Zara Patel expressed her dismay in response to the deepfake video and warned others not to accept everything they see online.

In a story posted on Instagram, she wrote: ‘It has come to my knowledge that someone has made a deepfake video using my body and the face of a famous Bollywood actress. I had nothing to do with the Deepfake video and I am very upset about what is happening.’

Zara Patel expressed her concern over the threat posed by deepfakes and their potential misuse in the future, writing: ‘I worry about the future of women and girls who are now afraid to come on social media. Please fact check what you see on the internet. Not everything on the internet is real. I am very worried about what is happening.’

Senior actor Amitabh Bachchan not only reacted to the video but also demanded legal action. Amitabh Bachchan and Rashmika worked together in ‘Goodbye’ in 2022.

When a fact-checker posted a deepfake clip with the original video of a British-born Indian social media personality named Zara Patel, Amitabh Bachchan was the first to react, creating a legal and regulatory framework to deal with deepfakes in India. Urgently demanded.

Taking note of the matter, Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar tweeted on Monday that the government is committed to providing online security to its citizens.

Referring to the IT laws, the minister said, ‘These platforms are bound to stop disinformation and deep faxing is the latest and even more dangerous and harmful form of disinformation.’
