There is no way to say it diplomatically: the New Building Regulation (NBR) is a monster that, as long as it remains unchecked, directly causes the ultimate destruction of Athens and other cities. It sounds like a dark and boring topic, but it affects us all. If you’re wondering why in the last sustainable suburbs beautiful elegant detached houses with cozy gardens are giving way to massive concrete monoblocks without a trace of greenery, now you know who’s to blame: the Greek state. NOK encourages the destruction of small buildings in exchange for (!!) an extra burden on the city: bonus height and total construction. It is one of the most inexplicable, unnecessary own goals in the urban policy of the Greek state, an impressive negative record in the country with the admittedly worst urban planning, zoning and general image of cities in the EU.
