In seven villages bordering Sunamganj’s Doarabazar, hundreds of houses were damaged by storm and hail.

The storm and hail started on Sunday (5 May) at 5:30 pm. Lasts about 15 minutes.

Locals said that the sun was not so bright in the sky of Sunamganj throughout the day. In the afternoon the sky suddenly turns black. Immediately the wind started blowing. After five minutes it started to hail. In this hailstorm of about 15 minutes, tin rice of hundreds of houses of Banshtala, Chowdhurypara, Maularpar, Colony, New Banshtala, Jhumgaon, Pekpara villages bordering Doarabazar upazila were damaged.

Mahmud Ali of Colony village said, “The rock fell and there were many big holes in the tin rice. Big (300-400 gram weight) rocks also fall with the rain. Many people’s household goods have been destroyed.

Veteran farmer Birmuktijoddha Ilyas Mia (80) of Banshtala village said, ‘I have never seen such a big rock in my age. A rock like the size of a stone.’

Rakib Miah of the same village said, ‘Suddenly a gust of wind started in the afternoon. Heavy hail followed. It caused extensive damage to the tin in my house.’

Sheikh Abul Hossain, chairman of Banglabazar Union Parishad, said that thousands of tins of rice in Banshtala village were damaged due to hailstorm. They have become uninhabitable.

In this regard, Doarabazar Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Neher Nigar Tanu said that there was no damage in Doarabazar headquarters. Hailstorm has damaged tin houses in the villages bordering the upazila. We will assist by making a list of those affected.
