The European Union has extended the validity period of anti-Russian sanctions until 2025. February 24. The relevant decision of the EU Council was published in the “Official Journal of the European Union”.

“In accordance with Resolution No. 266 of 2022 and as long as the illegal actions of the Russian Federation continue in violation of the ban on the use of force, which is a serious violation of international law, it is appropriate to keep in force all measures established by the Union and take additional measures if necessary. Therefore, the restrictive measures established by Decision No. 266 of 2022 should be extended for another 12 months, until February 24, 2025,” the decision reads.

The document also states that it is about the sanctions that were imposed in connection with the joining of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, as well as the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions into Russia.

In mid-January, the European Union started discussing the 13th package of sanctions against Russia. According to Bloomberg, the restrictions, which are expected to be adopted by February 24, were discussed at the meeting of EU ambassadors on January 17. It referred to the expansion of sanctions lists, additional trade restrictions, as well as measures to combat circumvention of restrictions. Later, the representative of the EU confirmed that the EU intends to impose new sanctions against Moscow in connection with the second anniversary of the start of Russian military operations in Ukraine.
