“ÖVP and the Greens must end the blockade on the supply chain law and put human rights above corporate interests”

Vienna (OTS/SK) SPÖ European spokesman Jörg Leichtfried welcomes yesterday’s agreement at EU level to ban the import of products made from forced labor. “It is long overdue that we ban products made from forced labor from the European internal market. Now it will be interesting to see whether Economics Minister Kocher also wants to block this regulation in the final vote at the level of the economics ministers – as he did with the EU Supply Chain Act,” says Leichtfried. “It must go without saying that products made from forced labor do not even reach the European market. In order to actually prevent production under inhumane conditions, we also need the supply chain law, which the Austrian government helped to block. One possibility would also be a national supply chain law,” said the SPÖ MP to the SPÖ press service on Wednesday. ****

“We want products that are manufactured without exploiting children, workers and the environment. The lever for this would be the EU supply chain law, on which there was an agreement after years of negotiations, but which is being prevented by Austria, among others.”

Leichtfried once again appeals to the Greens to increase the pressure in the coalition: “The Austrian government, especially Economics Minister Kocher, must end this blockade at the EU level.” If an EU supply chain law currently fails, then there is still the possibility for a national supply chain law, such as Germany and France have. SPÖ environmental spokeswoman Julia Herr is again submitting a motion to the Environment Committee today: “The government must finally stop putting corporate interests above human rights.” (Conclusion) ah/mb
