-King Thieu Tri ascended the throne

On January 20, Tan Suu year, or February 11, 1841, King Thieu Tri ascended the throne at Thai Hoa Palace at the age of 34, becoming the third king of the Nguyen Dynasty, succeeding his father King Minh Mang.

Thieu Tri’s real name was Nguyen Phuc Dung, later changed to Nguyen Phuc Mien Tong. When he ascended the throne, he changed his name to Nguyen Phuc Tuyen, the eldest son of Minh Mang.

Thieu Tri is described in history books as an intelligent emperor, dedicated to taking care of the country, knowledgeable in Confucianism, and fond of poetry. But Thieu Tri did not introduce any new reforms, only maintaining administrative, economic, educational, legal, military policies… from the Minh Mang period.

When Thieu Tri ascended the throne, Minh Mang’s expansion policy caused Dai Nam’s territory to reach the largest extent in history. Dai Nam dominated the southeastern region of Chan Lap, establishing Tay Thanh Town, but the harshness of Vietnamese military officials caused resentment and constant uprisings among the Chan Lap people. Military expenses caused the national treasury to become increasingly depleted.

Thieu Tri died on September 27, 1847, at the age of 41. 10 years after the death of Thieu Tri (1858), France opened fire to invade Dai Nam, beginning the period of Vietnam being colonized by France.

-Recognition of Vatican independence

On February 11, 1919, the Lateran Treaty was signed between Prime Minister Benito Mussolini representing the Italian King Victor Emmanuel III and Cardinal Pietro Gasparri representing Pope Pius XI of the Catholic Church, recognizing the independence of the Vatican City State. In June 1929, the Italian Parliament ratified this treaty.

Accordingly, the treaty recognizes Vatican City as an independent state under the sovereignty of the Holy See. The Italian government also agreed to financially compensate the Catholic Church for the loss of the Papal States during the unification of Italy under the power of the House of Savoy. In 1948, the Lateran Treaty was recognized in the Italian Constitution as regulating relations between the state and the Catholic Church.

In addition, the sub-treaty stipulates the Pope’s permanent neutrality in international relations. However, the Vatican had long been independent of any political power because of its spiritual authority and therefore refused to accept the settlement proposed in 1871. also stipulates that Catholicism is the state religion of Italy and adds a financial incentive agreement.
