Comprehensive housing package sets the right priorities – one billion euros for affordable housing and ownership

Vienna (OTS) “The extensive housing package presented today secures affordable living space and jobs in our country,” emphasizes Johann Singer, ÖVP area spokesman for housing and buildings. Specifically, one billion euros are to be invested in the non-profit sector – this also includes property developers in subsidized housing. This promotes both non-profit rental and condominiums and supports the construction sector. “Last year, experts predicted a decline in the construction industry this year. With the housing package, the federal government, with Chancellor Karl Nehammer at the helm, is setting the right focus,” said Singer.

“The rise in prices and runaway inflation are placing a heavy burden on the population. Due to the lack of housing construction in the coming years, there will also be a lack of apartments for people in the country in the medium and long term. As a people’s party, we are resolutely opposing this shortage of housing. With the package, around 20,000 “New apartments will be built and around 5,000 apartments will be renovated,” says Singer, who expects this to create new living space for around 44,000 people. “Especially in view of the land consumption in Austria, a special focus must be devoted to the renovation of living space or projects that have already been planned and ready for construction,” the MP emphasizes the promotion of renovations and new buildings in ecological harmony. The investment package would also secure jobs in the construction industry.

Particularly important for Singer is the temporary abolition of additional fees. “As a people’s party, we stand by property. Above all, we want to give young people in the country the chance to have their own four walls and therefore the additional fees on their first home are waived for a limited time and for the first 500,000 euros,” emphasizes Singer, who points out that that this relief measure will be available up to a limit of a purchase value of up to two million euros. This would also be a step towards increasing the ownership rate, which Chancellor Karl Nehammer wants to increase from 48 to 60 percent by 2030 with his “Austria Plan”. Easier access to loans for your first home will also contribute to this: “In the future, the first 200,000 euros can be accessed with a fixed interest rate of 1.5 percent.”

“As a people’s party, we stand for security, affordable housing and property. With the step we have now taken, the federal government under Chancellor Karl Nehammer and we as a coalition in parliament are ensuring the necessary relief,” concludes Singer. (Ending)
