A migration court on Wednesday formally confirmed the deportation from Sweden of a man responsible for several Quran burnings. However, out of concern for his safety, he was nevertheless granted a temporary residence permit.
The decision by the Swedish migration agency Migrationsverket to revoke the residence permit originally granted to the Iraqi-born man and his refugee status was lawful, the administrative court in Stockholm announced on Wednesday. It is believed that the man was involved in serious criminal offences.
According to the court, immigration authorities had provided sufficient evidence that the man had deliberately made false statements and withheld important information during the asylum check. His residence permit was therefore granted on false grounds.
However, due to his activities in Sweden, it is currently too dangerous for the man to return to Iraq. He therefore cannot be returned for the time being and will receive a temporary residence permit. However, according to the immigration authorities, his violations were so serious that he cannot be granted protection as a refugee again.
Copies of the Koran were repeatedly set on fire or publicly destroyed in Sweden last year. The Iraqi, who is critical of Islam, was responsible for many of those incidents at the time. The actions also led to angry reactions among Muslims abroad. This caused Sweden to experience serious diplomatic tensions with several countries. Swedish police conducted several investigations into the man for possible incitement to hatred.
