Before that, at about 10:00 a.m. on February 18, Mr. Phan Dinh Kieu (born 1969, residing in Kon Tum City, Kon Tum Province) drove a car with registration number: 36A- 485.67 on Cam Lo – La Son highway, towards Da Nang – Quang. Tri. The car carried the family of Mr. Phan Dinh Q. (born 1978), Mr. Q.’s wife, Ms. Le Thi H. (born 1983), and two children, KV (born 2009) and D.Q. (born 2015), living together in Tan Cong street (Dong Tan ward, Thanh Hoa city, Thanh Hoa province).

When reaching km 48+200m of Cam Lo – La Son highway, the section through Phong Dien district, the car overtook from the right side, colliding with a tractor with registration number: 63C- 136.59 pulling a trailer. Registration number: 63R-00227 by Mr. Huynh Van Dung (born 1974, residing in Long An commune, Chau Thanh, Tien Giang) was going in the same direction, in the same lane.
After the collision, the car with registration number: 36A-485.67 drove into the opposite direction of Quang Tri – Da Nang, crashing into the truck with registration number: 63H-005.68 driven by Mr. Lam Van Tam (born 1982, residing in Vinh My ward, Chau Doc, An Giang) was driving, traveling on the opposite side of the road in the direction of Quang Tri – Da Nang.

After that, car license plate: 36A-485.67 continued to plunge into the ravine on the right side of the one-way road heading Quang Tri – Da Nang. At the same time, the car with registration number: 63H-005.68 was pulled by a tractor with registration number: 51D- 150.90 and a trailer with registration number: 51R-349.20 driven by Mr. Nguyen Tan Dat (born 1980, residing in Pho Minh ward, Duc Pho, Quang Ngai). going in the same direction, behind, in the same lane heading to Quang Tri – Da Nang.
The accident caused D.Q. died on the spot, KV was taken for emergency treatment at Hue Central Hospital facility 2 but did not survive; Ms. Le Thi H. also died in the afternoon of the same day after many hours of intensive emergency treatment. The remaining people suffered minor scratches.
According to a report from the Traffic Police Department (Ministry of Public Security), the initial cause was determined to be the car with license plate: 36A-485.67 passing from the right and then to the left, hitting the front of the container truck, causing the accident.
