Vienna (OTS) The labor shortage in the nursing sector is already a reality and will become drastically worse in the coming years. In order to ensure Austria’s nursing care system is sustainable, making the nursing profession more attractive must now have the highest priority. Regarding the current discussion about a training offensive in the nursing sector, Dr. Peter Kostelka, President of the independent pensioners’ association: “We now finally need real measures to make the nursing profession more attractive: More and comprehensive training places, payment during training, the elimination of training costs, the attractiveness of the nursing profession through higher wages, shorter working hours and the right to a hard workers’ pension for nursing staff! And these must be implemented as quickly as possible!” ****

Zwtl.: New, more attractive image of the nursing profession
The independent pensioners’ association has been calling on those in government for many years to finally implement a “real nursing reform that also deserves the name”. So far, a lot has been announced but hardly implemented. “In the nursing sector it is already 5 past 12, the shortage of nursing staff is a reality – in the stationary and mobile sectors. Far too few young people or people changing or returning to work choose the nursing sector. Care work is considered extremely strenuous, exhausting and poorly paid. A real training and attractiveness offensive must create a new, more attractive image of the nursing profession. So that we can get more people interested in the nursing profession and keep those who already practice it in nursing. This is the only way we can guarantee those in need of care in Austria the best care. Now – and in the future,” concluded Kostelka. (Ending)
