Carinthia: 9 wolves shot down, none of which threatened humans or livestock – 2024-02-29 06:09:38

ÖVP State Councilor Gruber, himself an enthusiastic hunter, is trying to use all illegal means to exterminate the wolf – a strictly protected species – as in the Middle Ages

Vienna (OTS) ÖVP Regional Councilor Gruber has so far sent out well over 100 (!) kill orders – far more than there are wolves in Carinthia. 9 of these strictly protected animals have already been shot, although not a single one of them has killed a farm animal or threatened a person. An order to kill a wolf in the Lesachtal and Oberdrauburg has now been issued again until March 20, 2024. In Carinthia, significantly more wolves were advertised for killing and actually killed than in any other federal state. Gruber’s goal is clear: create facts before the rule of law can stop him. “The wolf has to go!” is apparently the only thing that goes through this fanatical hunter’s head. Anyone who remains so anachronistically stuck in the Middle Ages instead of having accepted modern ideas about nature and species protection would probably also be fine with wolf fishing and poison bait. Shooting a wolf is rarely possible without serious injury and suffering. Hunting newspapers recommend shooting through the shoulder so that the wolf cannot escape far. It is secretly said that the hatred of the wolf is so great that people deliberately shoot it in the stomach, so that it retreats into the thicket and dies there slowly and painfully.

The way in which the shooting of wolves is currently practiced in Carinthia allows anyone to trigger a kill order. It’s enough to say that you saw a wolf and that it wasn’t scared off by clapping. And Gruber immediately issues a kill order. In other words: the wolf is fair game in Carinthia and can be killed at any time and anywhere, regardless of whether it is a nursing mother whose children will then starve.

VGT chairman DDr. Martin Balluch said: “If a person is unlawfully harassed by the authorities, they have a right to appeal. But when a state councilor who has gone wild terrorizes and exterminates a strictly protected animal species completely illegally, then the constitutional state stands by and does nothing. People like Gruber at the controls of power are exactly the problem that has brought us as a society to the brink. Climate change, insect extinction, biodiversity loss and soil sealing of 13 hectares per day are the consequences if human benefit is put in the foreground and everything that does not serve this goal or is in the way is destroyed with brute force. I can only hope that the constitutional state is able to slow down this “Rambo” that is running amok. Otherwise all international conventions are just flowery words with no substance.”
