Ordinance on mandatory child protection concepts in schools is due to come into force in the 2024/25 school year

Vienna (OTS) “Every child has the right to a life free of violence – regardless of whether it is physical, psychological or sexual violence,” says Barbara Neßler, spokeswoman for the Green Party for children, youth and families, and explains: “For us it was therefore important in the negotiations on Child protection package particularly important that prevention starts before anything even happens. Unfortunately, warning signs are still ignored far too often and a child has to turn to up to eight adults before they are believed. With the child protection concepts that will be mandatory from the next school year, we are taking a big step forward. With prevention that works before children become victims.”

From a green perspective, it is essential that child protection concepts in schools are developed in a broad, participatory process with the involvement of educators, children and parents. “It’s about questions like: In which rooms do I feel uncomfortable? In what tone do we communicate with each other? And who do I turn to if I notice an uncomfortable situation?” explains education spokeswoman Sibylle Hamann. The Greens are convinced that just dealing with these questions will increase sensitivity to non-violence. “Educators need support and clear instructions for action,” says Hamann and continues: “Children need a fear-free environment to learn. School must be a safe, pleasant place for everyone.”
