Vienna (OTS) Team Vienna, the cadre of chefs from the Houses of Life, returned with the coveted silver medal from the IKA/Culinary Olympics in Stuttgart, one of the most renowned international cooking competitions.

Communal catering in Vienna secures podium space

At yesterday’s reception in the Red Salon of Vienna City Hall, Mayor Ludwig emphasized the importance of communal catering in Vienna and praised Team Vienna for their success: “I congratulate Team Vienna on their silver medal at the IKA Olympiad! This outstanding achievement shows how seriously the City of Vienna takes providing healthy and regional catering for the residents in the pensioners’ homes. This starts with purchasing primarily regional foods with a high organic content and ends with fresh delicacies on your plate every day. I am particularly pleased that this award also gave an excellent certificate to the Houses for Living apprenticeship: Team Vienna was once again the only one in which apprentices also had the opportunity to demonstrate their skills.”

130 apprentices are trained in the houses for living. Around 70 apprentices are currently completing their comprehensive training in the field of gastronomic management, with the chance to become part of Team Vienna.

Ambassadors for Vienna

Since 2012, Team Vienna has proven that cooking is not just an art, but also an Olympic discipline. The chefs present the gastronomic diversity and quality that Vienna is known for. With their successes at international events, they not only demonstrate their professional expertise, but also the high level of appreciation and support they receive from the City of Vienna. Through their commitment, both in apprentice training and in the regular hospitality of Viennese senior citizens, they actively contribute to the high quality of life in Vienna. Team Vienna is therefore not only a figurehead for Vienna’s gastronomic scene, but also a symbol of cohesion and innovation in the city.

More quality of life for Vienna’s seniors

The fresh kitchens of the houses for living are the basis for these successes. City councilor Peter Hacker, President of Houses for Living, emphasizes the importance of good nutrition for the well-being of Viennese seniors: “Good nutrition is important so that you feel good – especially in old age. The gastronomic support of our Viennese seniors is therefore particularly important to us. The Vienna team impressively demonstrates how quality and commitment can go hand in hand. With their innovative dishes, they not only delight the palates of seniors, but also make an important contribution to a better quality of life for seniors in Vienna.”

Participation in national and international competitions contributes to the constant development of food in the houses for life. Christian Hennefeind, managing director of Haus zum Leben, sees the award as motivation for the future: “Our ultimate goal is to offer only the best. Gastronomy is a central area and ensures that our seniors have freshly prepared delicacies every day. For us, this award is not only a confirmation, but also a motivating force to continue on our successful path.”

Ludwig praised the continuous work in the field of culinary art and emphasized the international successes of the Vienna team, which most recently secured the silver medal at the 2022 World Championships in Luxembourg. The City of Vienna is proud to have supported Team Vienna in its successes and looks forward to further outstanding achievements in the future.
