LONDON (AP) — A 13-year-old boy was killed and four other people were injured Tuesday after a man armed with a sword attacked several people and two police officers in the east London suburb of Hainault. .
A 36-year-old man was detained at the scene, police said, and said the incident was not being treated as a terrorist act.
Two police officers were hospitalized for stab wounds.
Chief Constable Stuart Bell said the incident was “truly horrific”.
“I can’t even imagine how those affected must be feeling,” he said at the doors of the homes where the attack occurred.
The Metropolitan Police said they received a call early Tuesday reporting that a vehicle had crashed into a house on a residential street and that several people had been stabbed near the Hainault metro station.
No further details were immediately available.
A video released by the British press showed a man in a yellow hooded jacket holding a sword or a long knife walking near houses in the area.
Witnesses said they heard officers yelling at the suspect to put his gun down as they chased him.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called the incident “shocking,” adding: “This type of violence has no place on our streets.”
Police did not believe there was a threat to the community as a whole, said Ade Adelekan, deputy police commissioner.
“We are not looking for additional suspects,” he said. “The incident does not appear to be related to terrorism.”
London Transport said Hainault tube station was closed due to a police investigation in the area.
