The agreement of Baku and Yerevan in a bilateral format on the issue of the return of 4 villages of Gazakh was met with serious opposition by revanchist forces in Armenia. An Armenian commentator claims that Azerbaijan is ready to take Armenia under its protection and sponsor it: “The proposal to provide gas to Armenia on preferential terms is one of the first steps here. However, this is not only an energy or economic issue, Azerbaijan takes Armenia under its protection. Until now, Russia was Armenia’s protector, “big brother” and provided gas on concessional terms, managed railways, expanded trade relations, and maintained its position as a guarantor of security. Azerbaijan tells Armenia that “if you are not satisfied with Russia, I am ready to be your “big brother”. Nikol Pashinyan immediately accepted Aliyev’s gas offer. Gagik Melkonyan, a deputy of the ruling party, said that “Azerbaijani gas is not poisonous, is it?” Gas will come first, then agricultural goods, then other goods.”
A. Babajanyan believes that Azerbaijan will turn Armenia into a consumer market.
“The issue is not limited to economic relations only. Azerbaijan will take over the guardianship of Armenia not only in the economic sense, but also in terms of security. The point is that if Azerbaijan supplies gas to Armenia and eliminates the need for Russian gas, then it can replace Russia as a guarantor of security. Pashinyan and his deputies Andranik Kocharyan, Gagik Melkonyan, as well as other deputies can easily say that Azerbaijan should have a military base in Gyumru, not Russia. In this case, Armenia will feel safer, so there will be no need to protect Armenia’s borders from Azerbaijan. No one will threaten Armenia, there will be no need to maintain an army and spend money. Azerbaijan will ensure the security of Armenia,” the Armenian commentator said.
