Former England footballers and now TV pundits Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville clashed as they selected the team of 2023’s best players.
Publika.az reports that when they were asked to pick a third striker (by which time Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe were already in the team), a friendly argument ensued.
Carragher suggested Lionel Messi, claiming that “France Football” awarded the Ballon d’Or. Gary disagreed with his colleague’s choice, saying that the World Cup was in 2022 and the Argentine superstar had not done anything memorable since then.
Neville thought that Vinicius Junior deserves a place in the team. Then the argument started.
Karrager: “I would choose Messi because of what he has done in MLS. Some of his goals and assists…”
Neville: “In 6 matches?”
Karrager: “I know, but it was incredible, it was incredible. What did Vinicius do?
Neville: “I’ll tell you. He scored 18 goals and made 17 assists in 44 matches. 35 effective actions!”
Karrager: In “Real”? In the joke league? What did “Real” win? Vinicius didn’t even win La Liga.”
